Open Question: How to make windows prompt for password and username when accessing restricted folder on a network share?

Let say I have a network share with bunch of folders and subfolders. User A, who has basic user permissions, can only access folder F1 on that share. User B has access to folders F1, F2, and F3. So: I am in a meeting and logged in as user A (because of different restrictions and for security reasons). However, a supervisor comes to this meeting and wants to show us some statistical data. She will have to go to folder F2 to look it. But I am already doing my stuff below user A account. How to make windows prompt for a pass/user when I try to access the folder F2, so my supervisor can just log in with his credentials? I don't want to log out. Why Linux has this feature, but Windows... ? THANKS A LOT.

Open Question: how can I check to see if a Fortran compiler is installed on a Linux machine?

Anyone know a quick way to do this? I've inherited a Linux server, and the previous administrator can't be contacted. Thanks guys. Turns out gfortran at the command line worked, though gcc didn't. I was below the impression that if you ran: # gcc something.f -o something.exe it would go, "Hey, look, a .f file! chilly, feed it to gfortran and look if mikey likes it"....but alas, I was wrong. :)

Open Question: How do I fix my (dad's) speakers?

about eight years ago, my STUPID cousin was bragging to my dad about his computer, and how much more grand it was compared to my dad's. He was comparing our difficult steer pie graphs to his possess (based on percentage). He told my dad to deleted anything and everything he could, b/c his difficult steer was less full than ours. He had a 20 gig, while we had 12. Duh! Anyway, my dad has continued to do this on our new computer, w/ 250G with the excuse that it speeds the computer up. He won't hear to me, b/c I learned different than my cousin. I broke the computer several times.(My learning style). Now he deletes MP3s, pictures, (things that aren't continuously running in RAM, and somehow, a Linux partition, he said the internet was really faster after that one. The questions are: ----He recently deleted a program from Add/Remove that controlled the speakers. Now he wants me to fix them, but I don't even know what the program was, and the speakers won't work. ----I'm considering steadystate to keep him from doing this again, this being his computer, should I do it?

Open Question: Trying to run Knoppix on my old XP computer to test for compatability, but it won't boot from cd?

Someone said to watch the monitor once you turn the computer on and it would say whether to hit the "del" key or the "f2" key to cease the boot. Then you should be able to change where it boots from. It did not work, and I would really adore to receive Linux on my computer so I can receive some practice on it (just started my Linux+ classes). Thank you for any advice or assistance :)

Open Question: Download .html and .cgi pages?

I would like to keep copies of threads from a forum which has .html and .cgi pages. I could use perl utility wget, and while I am aware there is a windows version I reviewed the 12 steps to make the utility possible and don't consider it "user friendly". Nor do I want to install linux and use wget from a linux box. In the past I have used freeware programs and they were cumbersome and didn't target the files I asked for. Because these threads are in .html and .cgi (perl 5) and I do not have access to a webserver in order to use PHP/Curl commans fopen() fgets() file() http_get() and so forth. I tried to create a .bat and .cmd file with those tags and it just flashed a cmd screen. Because these threads are a flat file database I'd like to use a kiddie script without going so far as to compile and later install the program. Also I don't have access to a webserver either. Been searching for answers for weeks and I am far more confused than when I started. That's odd because with the freeware program I was able to download .cgi files, not always the files I wanted to download. *sigh* Colanth & Schimdty, Any chance either of you can answer the question? I don't want to use a freeware program to download the WEB PAGES because I inadertingly downloaded system files, private messages, and Log files with MD5 hashes that can be converted to plain text passwords. I tried to use a screenscraper to yank the html but on the cgi pages it again downloaded (saved) sensitive information. If you cannot provide possible solutions why bother responding? I want to target specific pages in order to bypass file structures which link to system files.

Open Question: Anyone Wanting to Install Linux On PS3?

Installing Linux on PS3 (Basic Edition) BETA (unfinished)21/11/08Aqib S. I will show you how to install Linux on PS3. It’s not a geek thing though. Everyone can do this basic task. Any damages caused, by following this method, then I will not be responsible for it. Sony indicated that it is entirely legal to install Linux on PS3. I spent 5 hours configuring this technical software installation! If you find anything not understandable or got to ask questions then feel free to e-mail me at aqib888@yahoo.co.uk. Installing any Linux based operated system on PS3 will not tamper the official PS3 software, because the official PS3 software is actually stored on to the read-only flash chip. So this means that no matter what you do (by human interface input devices) you will not be able to damage the actual operated system that PS3 runs on. Things you will need: Computer Standard CD Burner Super quick Internet Access Standard USB Mouse Standard USB Keyboard 10 GB Space Available (PS3 difficult steer) 1.Go to “http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/7.10/release/ubuntu-7.10-alternate-powerpc+ps3.iso” and download this file or other preferred operated system (remember, I’m using Ubuntu so my instructions might differ from other Linux based operated systems). 2.Burn the ISO data to a standard 800MB disc, the slower the better. 3.Format the PS3 difficult steer using the format utility, and also allocate 10GB to “other operated system”. 4.Insert the Linux CD into the PS3 CD slot. 5.Go to PS3 settings menu and select “System Settings” and then select “install other operated system” and then PS3 will start searching for operated system boot files. (not installing yet) 6.In “System Settings” select “Default OS”, and then PS3 will prompt you to restart the system. 7.Once started, the Kboot loader will show up, connect your computer keyboard and mouse. Type “Install” using your keyboard and hit “Enter” to proceed to the next installation screen. This will take a while to load-up! 8.You will now be welcomed by a sexy Linux interface. Follow the instructions provided on screen. 9.Once installed you might be wanting to change the resolution, so press “Ctrl+Alt+F1” This will show up “System Console”. 10.Type “ps3videomode –v h” it will return you a list of supported resolutions. 11.In order to check each resolution you will have to cease the “gdm” service, so type “sudo /etc/init.d/gdm cease” the gdm service will be stopped. pick your preferred resolution, for example, I pick 4 which is 1080i so I will type “ps3videomode –v 4 +128” (+ 128, means full screen). 12.Once you have chosen your preferred resolution then you will have to start the gdm service in order to test the resolution, so type “sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start” BETA VERSION

Open Question: Help with Everex Stepnote?

I have an everex NW3500W with xp home loaded i have tried to install xp pro it failed to copy the OEMBIOS.bin file which kept the pro edition from "validating itself". So i bought a vista upgrade when i tried to upgrade in the middle of the whole proccess vista said it failed to install an important file. so it rolled back to xp home. I dont think its the difficult steer because i can format the steer. I also booted from the vista disk to do a "clean install" it work and was compatible! but i couldn't activate it because the license says i can only upgrade from xp i cant just clean install it, my fault!! So idont know whats up maybe it some type of protection on the bios or something this is not an old laptop. But i am sick of xp home! I also tryed several linux distros but i have integrated graphics and the resolution would always be so darn low! and i had some graphics crashes. I am about to give up on this thing.
